What is interventional radiology?

Interventional radiology (IR) is a medical specialty that uses imaging techniques to guide minimally invasive procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions. Interventional radiologists, who are physicians with specialised training in both radiology and interventional procedures, use advanced imaging technologies such as fluoroscopy, ultrasound and CT scans to visualise and navigate inside the body.

The interventional radiologist carefully interprets these images to diagnose injury and disease, and to perform a range of interventional medical procedures, including injections of corticosteroids, local anaesthetic or platelets.

Continuing advances in technology mean the range of conditions that can be treated by interventional radiology is continuing to expand. The minimally invasive nature of interventional radiology procedures typically leads to shorter recovery times, less pain, and lower risks compared to traditional surgical approaches.

How do I prepare for an interventional procedure? keyboard_arrow_down

For preparations for interventional procedures, please check with the specific procedure - see 'Related procedures' at right (or below if on mobile).

If you are taking blood thinners, please tell the receptionist when making your booking. This will allow the radiologist to assess whether it is safe to do the procedure.

On the day of your appointment, please bring any relevant previous x-rays, ultrasound, CT or MRI scans, and please also tell the radiologist if you are allergic to any medications.

It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing with easy access.
