Small bowel follow through

A small bowel follow-through, also known as a small bowel series or barium follow-through, is a medical imaging procedure used to examine the small intestine, or bowel.

What is a small bowel follow through?

Your doctor may recommend this test for various reasons, including irregular bowel motions, poor nutrient absorption, and lower abdominal pain.

It uses a fluoroscopic technique aimed at acquiring high-resolution x-ray images of the small bowel, enabling evaluation of its motility. These detailed images aid healthcare providers in making diagnoses and formulating appropriate treatment plans.

How do I prepare for a small bowel follow-through? keyboard_arrow_down

Prior to commencing the test, it is essential that the small bowel is empty. Therefore, you will be instructed to fast from eating or drinking for six hours before the examination.

You will be provided with an x-ray gown to wear and will be required to undress to underpants and a singlet.

Female patients are advised to inform medical staff beforehand if they are pregnant or suspect they may be.

Who performs the procedure? keyboard_arrow_down

A radiographer (x-ray technician) will be present in the room to explain and conduct the procedure, ensuring you full understand what is happening and can address any queries or concerns.

You will be given some liquid barium (Entero VU) to drink. This is swallowed to trace its passage through the small bowel, and show up on X-ray images.

Following ingestion, and after a short wait, you will lie on an x-ray table for the first x-ray of your abdomen. A series of X-ray pictures are then taken over a period of half to one hour, depending on individual circumstances. This is to observe the barium moving through the bowel at different time points.

Typically, this test lasts approximately one to one and a half hours.

What happens after the test? keyboard_arrow_down

After the Radiologist has seen your x-rays and the test is completed, you can eat or drink normally. You will notice the barium in your bowel motions for the next few days.

The radiologist will review the pictures and provide a written report to your referring doctor.
